The idea of the mobile fablab has been in our minds almost from the beginning of Fablab Saigon. Packing our tools on a truck, driving through Vietnam, showing people how digital fabrication can help them solve local problems. The very heart of the mission of Fablab. No fablab wouldn’t dream about it! “Give ordinary people the right tools and they will build extraordinary things”.
After more than 2 years, we believe that now is the right time to make this dream come true. We’ve got a strong team, amazing volunteers, a great network, and we have a methodology. We now know which program we want to run in each city we visit: a 48h maker to entrepreneur bootcamp for 14-18 years old participants. Why this program? This is an ideal program to introduce about digital fabrication, yet still building prototypes and have a life changing impact on participants: give them the confidence to actually build something, find solution. The key for innovation and entrepreneurship spirit. It also gives a great preview of what a fablab locally could do.
We ran this program once in HCMC in March and we can’t wait to bring it to other places!
We will soon be launching a crowdfunding campaign to run the mobile fablab in July from HCMC to Hanoi. Where we go will depend on how much money we can raise, but also where do people want us to come.
We can only go to places where someone locally is willing to help us to call for participants, help us to reach out to the community, find challenges to solve and help us sort out a good venue to run the bootcamp. Most likely that someone will be the one to start a fablab in their city!
